LYNCHPIN #1 $4.00 - 16 pages - B&W
Canadian indie comics creator William Brian MacLean
wanted to say something important with the first issue of LYNCHPIN, something vital.
By the Numbers, the feature story, is very moving as it relates how one half hour in high school
profoundly affected the life of Alanna Star.
Sexual assault shouldn't exist. There's no reason
for it, but it happens because we fail our children. Naively, we 'protect' teens by keeping them ignorant
of their sexuality, refusing to acknowledge their need for informed awareness about their responsibility
to both their sexual selves & the rights of those they find attractive. We allow this as a society,
& we should be ashamed.
One reviewer has
this to say about LYNCHPIN's
premiere issue: “Imagine my surprise when
I discovered that this comic (which I thought would be in the ‘humor’ pile by that cover) is
a brutally honest take on sexual assaults on women. It was a horror story brilliantly told, and kudos
to the man for putting it out there. I’m not sure what else this guy has up his sleeve but it’s pretty
clear that he wants to try some new things, and I’m genuinely curious to see what he does next. This
isn’t an easy read but is an important one, and well worth the effort to hunt down.”

The backup story, Gum Me, contrasts the heavy tone of the feature with an amusing
autobiographical moment between the author, his girlfriend & their expressions of OCD.
